Lagerquist was filled to the brim with students, faculty, family and friends who traveled to watch the University Wind Ensemble perform March 15.

Under the direction of Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands, Dr. Ed Powell, the University Wind Ensemble performed a collection of pieces that demonstrated the talents of its players and the passion of its director.

The University Wind Ensemble played a collection of eclectic pieces over the course of its hour-long performance. Standout pieces included the melodic hymn “Be Thou My Vision” by David Gillingham and the upbeat composition “The Lads of Wamphray” by Percy Grainger.

“[Be Thou My Vision] is one of those pieces that shows just how lush and beautiful a wind ensemble can play,” Powell said. “[The Lads of Wamphray] is a virtuosic, fun piece…that leaves everybody going [home] happy.”

Powell pursued music education at various universities across the country in order to become a music director. Equipped with a Master’s Degree in Music Education and a Doctorate in Conducting, Powell directs PLU’s own University Wind Ensemble.

Powell is a fan of the modernness of music composed for wind ensembles, as most compositions have been written within the last century.

The University Wind Ensemble also performed “Dance of the New World” by Dana Wilson, a piece which showcased the modern, jazzy sound that wind ensembles can produce.
