Campus Safety Week in Review: December 4-10, 2017

This week in Campus Safety news: A 19 year old was arrested for assaulting a student in a campus parking lot, UPS students sprayed a fire extinguisher on campus and ran but were caught by Sheriff’s deputies, and several medical aid calls were reported across campus. 12/4 Olson Medical Aid

Date: Monday, December 4, 2017 at 9:49 PM
Location: Olson Gymnasium, Field House
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to a medical aid call for a student who twisted his ankle while playing soccer in the Olson Gymnasium Field House. Officers provided a cold pack and a courtesy transport to his room. Further assessment by Emergency Medical Technicians was offered but was declined by the student.

12/4 Tingelstad Medical Aid

Location: Tingelstad Residence Hall
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to a medical aid call for a student who had lost consciousness while showering. When officers arrived, the student was awake and stated that they had not eaten much during the day and had a high temperature. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue was contacted for further patient assessment. Emergency Medical Technicians assessed the student and decided transport to the hospital was not necessary.

12/5 Off-Campus Bike Theft

Date: Reported Tuesday, December 5, 2017 (time not reported), Incident occurred 3 weeks prior.
Location: Off Campus – Heather Court Apartments
Synopsis: The PLU Bike Co-Op reported that one of their bicycles had been stolen while out on rental to a student. The student explained that the bike was stolen three weeks prior while locked up off campus at the Heather Court Apartments on 127th St S.

12/9 East Hauge Lot Assault & Arrest

Date: Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 12:13 AM
Location: East Hauge Parking Lot
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers and Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of two people fighting in the East Hauge Parking Lot. Deputies arrested a 19 year old white male non-student for domestic violence assault. The suspect was also issued a Restricted From Campus order. The victim of the assault was a student. Campus Safety officers escorted the student back to their residence hall room and provided information about resources on campus.

12/9 Tingelstad Medical Aid

Date: Saturday, December 12, 2017 at 1:15 AM
Location: Tingelstad Residence Hall
Synopsis: Campus Safety was contacted by the Tingelstad Residence Hall on-duty Residence Assistant concerning a student who was vomiting in a bathroom. The student stated that they were under a doctor’s care for stomach problems. She declined evaluation by Emergency Medical Technicians.

12/9 Garfield St Arrest & RFC

Date: Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 9:36 PM
Location: Park Ave S & Garfield St S
Synopsis: Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies contacted a non-student for suspicious behavior on campus. They were then arrested by deputies for an outstanding warrant. Campus Safety officers issued a Restricted From Campus order on the subject.

12/9 Health Center Property Damage

Date: Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11:45 PM
Location: Heath Center, East side of building
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers observed an uprooted No Parking sign on the eastern side of the Health Center. The sign appeared to have been struck by a car. The sign was moved to the Campus Safety office to be collected by Facilities Management.

12/10 Ivy Lot Mischief & RFC

Date: Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 1:00 AM
Location: Ivy Parking Lot, Northeast Corner
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers attempted to contact an individual hiding among cars in the Ivy parking lot. The subject refused to stop for officers. He entered a Jeep Wrangler and fled the scene. Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle and contacted the six occupants, all of whom were students at the University of Puget Sound. Some of the occupants were uncooperative with officers. Campus Safety officers issued Restricted From Campus notices to all six occupants of the vehicle and confiscated a fire extinguisher that they had been using to spray around the Ivy parking lot.

12/9 South Hall Alcohol Violation

Date: Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11:00 PM
Location: South Residence Hall
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to a noise complaint in South Residence Hall. Nine students and one non-student were in a room with alcohol present. At least one occupant was identified as underage. This incident has been forwarded to PLU Student Rights & Responsibilities for review.

12/10 Hinderlie Fire Alarm

Date: Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 7:15 PM
Location: Hinderlie Residence Hall
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters responded to a fire alarm activation in Hinderlie Residence Hall, activated in the third floor east hallway. Firefighters found no source of the alarm and reset the fire alarm system.

12/10 The Commons Medical Aid

Date: Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 9:50 PM
Location: Anderson University Center, The Commons
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to a student having a seizure in The Commons at Anderson University. Emergency Medical Technicians with Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded and evaluated the student. The student’s parents were contacted since they have a history of seizures. The student was cleared by EMTs and returned to their room.
