Campus Safety Week in Review: November 27 – December 3, 2017

This week in Campus Safety news: Several medical aid incidents occurred throughout campus, unauthorized signs were posted on water fountains throughout campus, and a hole was cut in a fence at Facilities Management. Explore our interactive incident map to learn more.


11/27 OMM Medical Aid

Date: Monday, November 27, 2017 at 6:43 AM
Location: Anderson University Center, Old Main Market
Synopsis: Campus Safety was notified that an Old Main Market student employee had passed out twice and co-workers were concerned. Campus Safety officers responded and determined that evaluation by Emergency Medical Technicians was appropriate. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue EMTs evaluated the student employee and determined that they were dehydrated. EMTs cleared the scene and the student was escorted to their residence hall room to rest.

11/27 South Hall Medical Aid

Date: Monday, November 27, 2017 at 7:45 PM
Location: South Residence Hall
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to South Hall to conduct a wellness check for a student who contacted Campus Safety to report trouble sleeping and panic attack-like symptoms. Officers learned that the symptoms were a result of drug use. Emergency Medical Technicians with Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and the Resident Director on-duty were notified and responded. EMTs advised that medical transport was not necessary. This incident has been forwarded to PLU Student Rights & Responsibilities for review.

This incident was originally categorized by Campus Safety as a Drug Violation, but the Mast re-classifies it as a Medical Aid because community safety should always take priority over policy enforcement.

11/28 Library Medical Aid

Date: Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 7:39 AM
Location: Mortvedt Library
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to the Mortvedt Library for the report that a student had become unconscious and struck his head. Officers arrived to find the student sitting in a chair, pale and nauseous. Emergency Medical Technicians with Central Pierce Fire & Rescue were called to evaluate the student and determined the student was dehydrated. The student was cleared to resume normal activities.

11/28 Pflueger Marijuana Violation

Date: Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 5:15 PM
Location: Pflueger Residence Hall
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to assist Residential Life staff with an odor of marijuana investigation. A resident student was contacted in their room, where the odor was coming from. The resident admitted to smoking off-campus. A small amount of marijuana was collected and destroyed in accordance with PLU policy. This incident has been forwarded to PLU Student Rights & Responsibilities for review.

11/29 Facilities Management Vandalism

Date: Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 2:00 PM
Location: Facilities Management Yard, Perimeter Fence
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to a report of vandalism at the Facilities Management yard, where it appeared that someone had intentionally cut through the perimeter fence. The damage most likely occurred sometime within the past two weeks. No items were reported missing from the area.

11/29 Hinderlie Medical Aid

Date: Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 8:30 PM
Location: Hinderlie Residence Hall
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers responded to a medical aid report for a student who had a previous injury that was causing pain and mobility issues. Officers provided a cold pack to the student. The student declined Emergency Medical Response, but did go to the hospital with a friend for further evaluation.

12/1 Residence Halls Signage Violation

Date: Friday, December 2, 2017 at 1:09 AM
Location: Buildings Campus-Wide (Originally reported as Hinderlie Residence Hall)
Synopsis: Several signs were found in several buildings throughout campus, including Hinderlie Residence Hall, posted on or near water fountains that contained a political message. The signs were not authorized. Campus Safety received several calls the next morning indicating that signs were found in Harstad Hall, Hauge Administration Building, and the Library. This information has been forwarded to PLU Student Rights & Responsibilities for review. Residential Life was also contacted about sign removal.

12/2 South Hall Medical Aid

Date: Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:40 AM
Location: South Residence Hall
Synopsis: A student called Campus Safety to report that they had attempted to harm themselves. Campus Safety officers and Emergency Medical Technicians with Central Pierce Fire & Rescue were dispatched. EMTs evaluated the student and determined that transport to the hospital was necessary. All appropriate notifications were made in accordance with PLU policy. This incident has been forwarded to PLU Student Rights & Responsibilities for follow up.

12/3 Wheeler Lot Vehicle Prowl

Date: Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 3:30 AM (Duplicate report at 2:00 PM)
Location: Wheeler Parking Lot, Southeast Corner
Synopsis: Campus Safety officers on routine patrol observed a vehicle in the Wheeler Parking Lot with a broken-out window. The owner of the vehicle was notified via email, and later contacted Campus Safety to conduct an inventory of the vehicle. They stated that the only thing missing from the car was the registration and possibly the title. There is currently no suspect information available.

12/3 Columbia Center Lot Vehicle Prowl

Date: Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 12:00 PM
Location: Columbia Center Parking Lot
Synopsis: A student contacted Campus Safety to report that the front-right tire of their vehicle had been stolen. Campus Safety officers arrived at the Columbia Center Lot and found the student’s vehicle on a jack, with the tire missing. There is no suspect information at this time.
