After twenty films, one would think that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would show signs of fatigue, but Captain Marvel proves that this is certainly not the case.

Following former Air Force pilot turned intergalactic Kree warrior Carol Danvers, portrayed by Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Captain Marvel takes the audience on a cosmic adventure set in the mid-1990s, accompanied by a soundtrack that perfectly reflects the time period.

When shape-shifting aliens known as the Skrulls invade Earth, Carol Danvers must unlock the secrets of a past she does not remember in order to stop the war between the Skrulls and her own kind, the Kree.

Larson leads an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury. In this film, we get to see a younger version of Fury, one who is still behind a desk and has both of his eyes, and the movie did a great job of further exploring Fury’s backstory.

Acting as his right hand man, Clark Gregg returns as fan favorite Phil Coulson. Coulson has not been on the big screen since his tragic death in the first Avengers movie, so it was great to see him again, especially as a less experienced agent, learning the ropes about being a spy.

Alongside them, the cast also includes Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull leader Talos, as well as Academy Award nominees Jude Law and Annette Bening, who play very important Kree characters and have significant roles in the story.

With a cast like this, the characters were easily one of the best parts of the movie, but the one that stands on top is Carol Danvers’ pet cat, Goose, who steals every scene she is in.

The movie provides the audience with some stunning visuals, along with space battles that can rival those of Star Wars.

Captain Marvel answers a lot of questions about the MCU, but also leaves just as many as this directly ties into the upcoming Avengers: Endgame all while telling a great stand-alone story and standing tall on its own.

Being the first female-lead MCU film and only the second recent female-led superhero movie following 2017’s Wonder Woman, there was a lot of hate generated by “fans” prior to the film’s release.

Unfortunately for those fake fans, Captain Marvel is one of the better debut solo movies that the MCU has had, and a fantastic introduction to Carol Danvers.
