PUYALLUP, WASH. – With strong plays from defense and offense, the PLU football team defeated the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags 10-7 in the first home game of the season on Sep. 15 at Sparks Stadium.
The Lutes (1-1) quickly got points on the board. Thirty seconds into the first quarter, Anthony Louthan took the pigskin 26 yards for the first touchdown of the game. Kicker Alex Brost hit the PAT to give the Lutes an early 7-0 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the half, and PLU went into halftime with a 7-0 lead. The Lutes continued their strong play by tacking on a 33-yard FG with 12:06 remaining in the third quarter to go up 10-0.
The Stags (1-2) finally got on the board with 12:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, when quarterback Zach Fogel hit Dylan Byrd for an 11-yard TD, bringing the score to 10-7. The Lutes defense held firm the rest of the game, and effectively won their first home game of the season.
First Year Head Coach Bryan McAdams was pleased with the effort the team put forth. “Today had a great group of teammates fighting for each other to the end,” said McAdams. “They did a great job.”
McAdams also was complimentary of his special teams unit and their hard work. “They really stood up when we needed them and helped us win our field position battle,” he said.
Looking forward, McAdams said that the team will continue to work hard throughout the season. “Every day is a phenomenal opportunity to work and get better,” he said. “We’re excited for another week of football.”
The Lutes’ next game will be on Sept. 29 at the University of Puget Sound.
