Mast Photographer Helen Wilmot caught up with Warran Neeley about the challenges of being independent.
“My idea of coming out of high school and graduating was to go to college somewhere far away from home. So, I came up to Washington from California to go to college. My first two years, I was living in Stuen Hall and then, this past summer, I moved into a house off-campus. That’s where I really had to learn how to be independent and how to just deal with life. For me, my sophomore year was a very big struggle, and I had to learn how to take care of myself and be alone. It was hard, because this whole time I would just be like, ‘Oh, I need other people to be with me.’ I’m still trying to find out how to be alone and handle all the challenges that life has to offer. I wonder, how do I deal with this all by myself without help from other people? When I need help from other people, I do accept it… It’s just like… I feel at the same time that I do need to be able to take care of myself. If I can’t be self-sufficient, then how am I going to live life?”
