Immanuel Wilkins: The 7th Hand (2022, Blue Note Records): Saxophonist Wilkins reaches the cosmic meditations of 1966 John Coltrane and spatial grooves of Robert Glasper. Wilkins’ quartet: pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Daryl Johns and drummer Kweku Sumbr deserve praise too. Listen to Don’t Break, Witness and Lighthouse.

Fu Manchu: Daredevil (1995, At The Dojo Records): Stoner-rock legends and desert wannabes Fu Manchu sear through 43 minutes of non-stop adrenalin. Songs about big bikes, souped-up vans and soaking surf vibes are the heart of Daredevil. If you want fuzz guitars and pulsating drums, it is for you. Listen to Tilt, Trapeze Freak and Travel Agent.

Ronnie Laws: Friends & Strangers (1977, Blue Note Records): Another saxophone driven album, Laws merges disco, funk, jazz and soul in his 1977 hit. The album swings and brings out the glamor of a simple breakbeat. Laws’ solos and Larry Dunn’s synthesizer transport you to the groove. Listen to Friends & Strangers, Life in Paradise and Goodtime Ride.
Look out for Fulton’s Music Room in the next issue of the Mast. Listen to his show Ambient Hour every Tuesday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. on LASR. To learn more about LASR and listen live, visit plu.edu/lasr.
