On Sep. 8, students came together to support PLU’s student-run radio station, LASR in hosting the first concert in The Cave of the school year. This lively show featured three local artists from campus and from the University of Puget Sound.
First on the line up was Gabe Folbes. Folbes performed as a one man show playing guitar and singing songs that he defines as a good mix of indie and alternative. His music was filled with lyrics that told stories and made the listener feel as if he was singing just to them.
“These lyrics describe real experiences… to describe life in a more beautiful way than it actually is.” Folbes noted about his musical inspiration.
After a short intermission, local band Dead Amy took to the stage. The crowd jumped up and down with excitement as they sang loud energetic songs all about growing up and finding yourself. This fun and fresh alternative band from UPS, plays for concert venues all over the greater Puget Sound area and is currently working on recording some of their top hits.
Several of the band members thought the show was awesome and had a lot of energy.
The final group of the night was the Rainier quartet composed of PLU music alumni and current students. This group took to the stage playing some jazz hits as well as an impromptu request from the crowd. Many of the songs featured solos from Guitar player Felix Halvorson and Alto Saxophonist Ben Martin. The quartet also featured a special guest, Rhyonna Rosales that evening to join them for a piano performance.
The group played their hearts out and left the audience in an uproar of cheers as they announced they will soon be recording some of their work.
The night was a success as the three performances rose to the occasion and played for a full crowd of PLU students. Each bringing something unique and authentically them, it allowed for every student who attended to connect with at least one piece of music and left each person full of energy and excitement when the night was over.
LASR plans on having many more concerts like these, especially with such a good outcome.
