Wednesday, Oct. 12 marks twenty-five years since the beloved American singer and songwriter Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., commonly known as John Denver, “left on a jet plane” and did not return, but instead tragically crashed into Monterey Bay off the coast of California, not far from the airport where he took off. He was 53 (born in 1943) at the time of his death.
In addition to Leaving on a Jet Plane, some of his more widely-recognized pieces include Rocky Mountain High, Sunshine on My Shoulders, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Annie’s Song, and a personal favorite, Rhymes and Reasons. His lyrics continue to touch the hearts of millions.
Note from the writer:
“Growing up, my family and I listened to Denver’s music virtually every time we were on the road to go camping. We called it our ‘camping music’ and were careful to listen to it only within that context. I’m glad we had that rule. Today, when I hear it, I am invariably brought back to the fondest memories of my childhood. Join me in remembering Denver for not only his voice and guitar, but his activism, affectionate spirit, love of nature, and lasting legacy.”
