She’s back, folks – after three years of relative musical silence, Ariana Grande has released the lead single off her upcoming album, rumored to be called “Eternal Sunshine” according to Music Times. The album is anticipated to be released sometime this year.
The rumors surrounding the album’s title come from the teaser trailer for the single’s music video, in which fans have found easter eggs relating to Jim Carrey’s “Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.” Carrey is one of Grande’s role models, and the film was also the late Mac Miller’s favorite movie. Grande was in a relationship with Miller before his passing.
The song is three minutes and thirty-four seconds long, although there is an extended forty-seven-second introduction that I find to be a little excessive. The lyrics cover a decent amount of the last three years, from a commentary on her love life, “[w]hy do you care who’s **** I ride,” to changes to her body which caused fans concern. Grande responds to these concerns by stating, “don’t comment on my body, do not reply.”
In the song’s chorus, she sings, “[S]ay that **** with your chest,” a very loud and clear statement to the world that she owns herself, her voice, and what matters to her. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that this new era will be full of empowerment and strength.
You can listen to the single on all platforms.
