The Pacific Lutheran track and field team hosted the annual PLU Open earlier this month and the team had a strong showing on their home track.
Head coach Adam Frye was pleased with what he saw from his team.
“I really liked how the team competed on Saturday, both execution and effort. It was exciting to end up with several women achieving performances that rank among the top 5 in the nation,” said Frye
One of these top women is high jumper Lauren Wilson, who finished first in her event. Wilson attributes this fast start to the difference in her preparation.
“I have started out more consistent than last year at this time. I have been able to focus on tweaking parts of my approach and technique over the bar, rather than change major things,” said Wilson.
Frye is very hopeful for what this team is able to do.
“I see great potential for our team this season,” said Frye. “Coach Trey Henderson is doing great work with the throwers and the look ready to rack up points at conference in all four throwing events.”
Senior thrower Nate Jarvis, who finished top ten in both the hammer throw and the shot put this meet, was excited to get to know Henderson as a coach.
“He has made such a great effort to help me be the best athlete I can be that I want to learn as much from him while I have the time,” said Jarvis.
Frye also touched on what he’s seen in past teams and how that how impacted this year’s team.
“We’ve established great momentum within the program over the last three years. We have some first-year women making a big impact already, which is exciting to see,” said Frye. “While we graduated some special athletes on the men’s side, we have a strong group returning and some new athletes ready to step up.”
The next meet for both the men and the women will have the team traveling to University of Puget Sound on April 5 and 6 to compete in the Shotwell Invitational.
PLU will also be hosting the Northwest Conference Championship meet April 26 and 27.
