Meet Associate Professor of Philosophy, Sergia Hay. Hay teaches ethics, environmental philosophy and the history of philosophy. I recently caught up with her and asked her what she is listening to.
What was the last song or album you listened to?
Lamb’s Wool by Foster the People and Compared to What by Roberta Flack set me up for my 8 a.m. class.
Who’s your favorite musician and/or band?
Way too hard to pick. But at the moment, and mostly because of the influence of one of my daughters, I’m really enjoying Parcels. Love them in concert and as background happy music.
What did you listen to in college?
U2, Natalie Merchant, Ace of Base, Sade, Blondie, Bim Skala Bim. I remember a 3-month period during my junior year when all I listened to was Wonderful by Runrig. I listened to a lot of classical music, like Telemann, Brahms and Dvořák. I was also a big fan of Keith Jarrett, as a soloist and also in his trio.
Beatles or Beach Boys?
Michelle and Good Vibrations are good now and then, but to be honest, both bands are kind of meh to me. If the question is really about musical genius though, then I say Prince.
Favorite concert memory?
The Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio performed live in Seattle in May and I went with some family. After two years of missing live music, there was something about feeling the bass through the floor and being in that moment with everyone else.
Any music you’re looking forward to?
I wish Stromae would release stuff all the time. I’m looking forward to the solo work of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and whatever my nephew makes (Spotify: Whyte Noir).
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I like to make and eat pizza. When not doing that, I like to go on long walks, ski (both kinds), browse Elliot Bay Book Company and watch bleak movies with snowy landscapes.
