Washington’s 2-month legislative session is in full swing in Olympia. Two housing-related bills, Transit Oriented Development HB2160 and Rent Stabilization HB2114, are currently headed toward the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Senator Steve Conway’s vote on both of these bills is currently unknown and is crucial to the fate of each. Conway represents Washington’s 29th legislative district, which includes Parkland, Spanaway, and parts of South Tacoma.Â
Both of these bills pose significant stakes for PLU students. Access to housing, specifically affordable units, is a major issue for many American voters. Across the country, people are feeling the strain of high rent, especially younger renters. More than 50% of Washington renters spend over a â…“ of their income on rent.Â
HB2160 aims to leverage current investments in transportation by allowing denser housing near major transportation hubs for increased citizen access. By providing housing with increased access to public transportation, more people would be able to live a more sustainable lifestyle by giving them increased access to public transportation thereby reducing their carbon footprint with personal vehicle usage.Â
HB2114 caps yearly rent increases by 7% and requires the landlords to give six months’ notice if the rent increase exceeds 5%. The bill aims to balance the relationship between renters and landlords by allowing landlords to maintain profitability while giving renters increased stability
 HB2114 and HB2169 will affect all generations of Washingtonians, including PLU students. The deadline to get passed through the committee is February 26th. Conway is one of the critical votes necessary to pass this legislation. Support from constituents would help these bills pass through committee.
