Pets of PLU: Kavi

Meet Kavi! Kavi is a Chihuahua-Terrier mix who belongs to Dr. Chanun Caine of the Education department. His name means “wise one” in Sanskrit, and at 18 years old, he surely has plenty of wisdom to share. However, he declined to comment when interviewed.

Caine adopted Kavi from the SPCA while completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Nevada. She says she was interested in a few other dogs at the time, but when she got to the shelter, Kavi “locked eyes with [her] and just howled.” She worried he would be loud once she took him home, but he hasn’t howled since. Somehow, Kavi knew he and Caine were meant to be.

Kavi is a very particular pup. Caine says he’s very intelligent and is able to manipulate humans. He wakes up at the same time every morning and knows exactly when it’s time for his meals. He likes to watch TV, but only the commercials; Caine says “he’s uninterested in Jeopardy! but will wake up for the commercials to bark at the ones with dogs.”

In his old age, he can often be found sleeping, but is still willing to get up and go for a long walk or let out some zoomies. Caine insists his longevity is based on his daily afternoon walks around their neighborhood and his diet of fresh chicken, vegetables, and bone broth, which she prepares for him every morning and night.

If you want to visit with Kavi, stop by Dr. Caine’s office, Admin 121C, or change your major to education so you can see him in your classes. He can be standoffish with new people, but he’ll start to warm up to you if you have a few treats in your hand!
