The dark water was only illuminated by the flashlight Helena and I wielded; the glimpse of a nurse shark had brought us all the way out here in the pitch-dark water and we were rewarded with her swimming straight at us.Â
I attended the Marine Biology 369 J-Term Bahamas Class in San Salvador in 2023. It was a class packed full of marine biology, in the classroom and the field. If you plan to go, expect lots of little gnats that want to eat you alive and delicious mac and cheese cooked for you by the Gerace Research Centre Cafeteria. It was amazing to get to go to San Salvador to learn the basics of field biology which included quadrats, transect lines, and field notes.
The late-night classes are certainly a new experience to most students, but you can get used to it if you enjoy snorkeling for 2 hours a day for a grade. With enough reef-safe sunscreen, underwater drawing abilities, and adequate beach time you too can survive the 20-figure analyses Micheal Behrens will encumber you with.
There is a daily blog that will be part of your assignments if you decide to apply and are accepted. You can read from previous years of students who have attended below:
