Campus Safety Week in Review: January 15-21, 2018

This week in Campus Safety news: A student left a backpack on campus with a loaded gun in it, a vehicle was stolen from a parking lot, and a ROTC vehicle’s window was broken. Explore this week’s Campus Safety Week in Review to learn more.


1/16 Yakima Avenue Vehicle Prowl

When: Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 2:30 PM

Where: West side of Yakima Ave S, between 125th St S & 127th St S.

What: A student reported that a portion of their truck’s exhaust system was cut off and stolen while it was parked along the South Campus fence line on Yakima Ave S. Campus Safety officers conducted a security camera video review and provided the student information with instructions on how to file a police report.


1/17 Hauge Weapons Violation

When: Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 8:25 PM

Where: Hauge Administration Building

What: A student in a non-PLU CITC class (which is held on the PLU campus) left behind a backpack in a classroom. Campus Safety was asked to retrieve the backpack by the student who had left campus. Campus Safety officers opened the backpack to look for identifying information and discovered a loaded handgun with an additional loaded magazine. The backpack was returned to the student and the CITC program was advised of the incident. The student was dismissed from the program for violating CITC and PLU policy regarding weapons on campus.


1/18 ROTC Lot Vehicle Damage

When: Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 10:29 AM

Where: Northwest corner of Tingelstad Gated Parking Lot

What: A PLU ROTC staff member reported a broken window on one of the ROTC vans. The van was parked in a gated area at the corner of 125th St S and Yakima Ave S. No clear cause of the damage could be determined, but landscaping work had taken place days prior to the damage being discovered. ROTC will seek repairs through government channels as the vehicle is not owned by PLU.


1/19 Health Gravel Lot Vehicle Theft

When: Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 9:26 PM

Where: Health Center Gravel Parking Lot

What: Campus Safety officers contacted a student near the gravel parking lot North of the Health Center parking lot. The student indicated that his vehicle had been stolen from the lot and he was awaiting a response from the Sheriff’s department. Officers assisted with connecting the student to the responding Sheriff’s deputies, while reviewing security camera video footage of the area. Video footage was obtained of two subjects arriving at the vehicle, entering the vehicle, and driving out of the lot Westbound on 120th St S. Both the student and deputies were informed of the presence of footage which will be turned over to the Sheriff’s Department.


1/18 Xavier Suspicious Person Trespass

When: Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 9:45 PM

Where: Xavier Hall, North Stairway Floor 3

What: Campus Safety officers contacted a non-student transient individual who was found in Xavier Hall sitting in the northern stairwell after the building had closed for the day. He had been contacted by officers earlier in the day for strange behavior and loitering in the library, at which time he was asked to leave campus. His failure to leave campus and his presence in a closed building after-hours led officers to issue a Restricted From Campus notice to him and escort him off campus property.


1/19 Tingelstad Alcohol Policy Violation

When: Friday, January 19, 2018 at 10:00 PM

Where: Tingelstad Residence Hall

What: Residential Life requested the assistance of Campus Safety officers for an alcohol policy violation in Tingelstad Residence Hall. Resident Assistants had attempted to contact the resident of a room and observed what they believed to be a a beer pong table set up when the resident became uncooperative and closed the door. There were several student guests in the room with the resident. Officers conducted a student-led room search which resulted in no alcohol being found. Officers gathered contact information from all parties involved.

Note: This incident was originally classified by Campus Safety as an Alcohol Violation. The Mast re-classifies it as a general policy violation because no alcohol was found in the room, yet the resident was uncooperative with PLU staff (a violation of PLU policy).


1/20 University Center Drug Violation Medical Aid

When: Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 2:30 AM

Where: Anderson University Center

What: Fire Department EMTs and Campus Safety officers responded to a medical aid call in the Anderson University Center for a student who was vomiting after consuming marijuana and alcohol at an off-campus party. Other students had picked up the student from the party and had been taking care of him. His condition had deteriorated and they called 911. EMTs evaluated and cleared the student to remain alone without transport to the hospital, as his symptoms had improved.

Note: This incident was originally classified by Campus Safety as a Drug Violation. The Mast re-classifies this as a Medical Aid because community safety is always more important than policy enforcement.


1/21 Olson Medical Aid

When: Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 8:45 PM

Where: Olson Auditorium, Field House

What: Campus Safety officers responded to a medical aid call at the Olson Auditorium Field House for a student who sustained a wrist injury while playing intramural soccer. Officers provided the student with a cold pack. The student declined EMT response and arranged to have a friend transport them to the hospital.
