Seniors majoring in Art and Design have started to showcase their work at the Senior Art Exhibition in the University Gallery of Ingram Hall.

The showcase, which runs from April 24 to May 25, is titled Palimpsest: Evidence of the Artist, and features the art of 19 students who will be graduating with a BA or BFA in Art and Design this May.

The exhibition includes a wide range of artistic mediums, including photography, painting, graphic design, and ceramics.

Senior Hope Jones’s capstone project is one of the featured works at the showcase.

“My capstone project is a series of self portraits and portrays society’s view of women on body image, mental health, and society’s definition of ‘beautiful,’” Jones said. “The project was essentially me working with myself.,” she said.

Jones said she spent hours sitting in front of the camera, taking photographs, and working on her gaze toward the camera.

“The process was a little difficult for me to work on since I am my own worst critic,” she said. “My overall experience was very rewarding for me because I was proud of the work I produced.”

Jones explained that the Senior Art Exhibition shows how artists at PLU have used their art to both work through and show emotions.

“My hope is that when people see these portraits that they are able to feel the emotions that I was portraying and makes people stop and think,” she said.
