Pacific Lutheran University’s Late Knight aired its Valentine’s Day Special live from the Cave on Feb. 18 to a full-capacity crowd.

Late Knight is a live comedy show entirely written and produced by PLU students. This last episode, the second of season seven, focused on Valentine’s Day and romantic relationships.

Late Knight host Matthew Tolar began the show offering advice about romantic relationships for his opening monologue. For people looking for a relationship, Tolar recommended the use of several PLU-inspired pickup lines.

All of the pickup lines were targeted toward the audience’s shared campus experiences. “You must be Foss Hall because you have all of us intrigued,” he joked.

This line stood out because of its specificity and accuracy. Speculations about Foss Hall vary between students and the building is the source of much curiosity around campus, so the joke resonated with the amused audience.

For those already in romantic relationships Tolar suggested several unique date ideas to make Valentine’s day special. “Nothing says sexy like being a bad boy,” Tolar said, listing a few low-level felonies to make your dating profile more alluring.

A Dolly Parton impersonator who was a Vegas wedding officiant came on next. She comically handed out advice to inquiries about romantic relationships.

Although she was a wedding officiant it quickly became clear that “Dolly Parton” was not in the wedding business to instigate happy marriages. She revealed her own marriage ended when her husband cheated on her with a woman named Jolene. After that she decided to sabotage others’ weddings.

The skit ended with Parton and Tolar fighting over what advice to give a man preparing to propose to his girlfriend. Finally Dolly threw her wig in Tolar’s face and stalked off the stage.

Several pre-recorded skits aired between live sections of the show, including a mock-trailer for a new movie called “Dining Dollar Daddy.” The skit follows the story of Devon, a second year biology major looking for a relationship, and Briegh. Briegh is a girl who used up all her dining dollars at the beginning of the semester and now needs someone to buy her food.

Throughout the skit Breigh mooches off of Devon’s meal plan while Devon tries to make their relationship work. The skit ends with Devon revealing he is now low on dining dollars. Briegh leaves him for Craig, who has a “way bigger meal plan.”

Tolar then interviewed Fulton Bryant-Anderson and Rosario Yoson, Lute Air Student Radio (LASR) co-general managers. Bryant-Anderson and Yoson promoted the upcoming Battle of the Bands and introduced the night’s musical guest Miss January.

A game between two student couples followed, where the couples competed to see which couple knew their partners the best. The game included questions such as “what is your partner’s go-to order at OMM?” and “What is your partner’s pet peeve?”

The show ended with an encore performance by Miss January.

The next show will air in April via live-stream and in person in the Cave with two new show hosts. Recordings of Late Knight episodes can be watched at mastmedia.plu.edu under the Mast TV tab.
